"Rīgas satiksme" restored traffic of tram No. 6 to Jugla
Although the traffic of trams No. 3 and 6 was fully restored on May 28, reconstruction works will continue until September 2013. As a result of the reconstruction of tram route No. 6 between Ropažu Street and Jugla, the low-floor tram will be provided with the necessary infrastructure, including the replacement of rail tracks, which reduced the levels of noise and vibration. The power supply infrastructure was also upgraded for the needs of low floor trams. Platforms have been extended and raised to make getting in and off trams comfortable for passengers.
2.65 km of rail tracks were reconstructed, 5.36 km of contact wires were replaced, 117 new supports for contact wires were erected, 10 new higher platforms were built at tram stops.
Given the wear and tear of the rail tracks, as well as the outdated infrastructure, including power supply and platforms, on April 14, 2012 Rīgas satiksme started the reconstruction of tram route No. 6.
Tram route No. 6 is the busiest tram line in Riga, with more than 700,000 passengers carried every month on the average. Its total length is 22.118 km. On May 16, 2013 tram route No. 16 was extended to Ausekļa Street.
It should be reminded that as of April 14, 2012 (during the whole period of reconstruction) trams No. 3 and 6 ran from the city centre by the route to tram stop Secondary school No. 45. To go further, passengers had to transfer to bus No. 6T, which went to the crossing of Brīvības gatve and Juglas Street.
